microsoft security essentials BETA

Microsoft just released a new beta version of Microsoft Security Essentials. I’ve been using their previous version for months now and LOVE it! It’s free and doesn’t hog resources like Norton and McAfee do. I’m excited to test their new beta version!

Check it out here: http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/22640/screenshot-tour-microsoft-security-essentials-2.0-beta/

sorry iphone users

I loved this article called “10 Things Android Does Better Than iPhone OS.”

Can you tell I love my new phone?! Don’t worry, I’ll be over it soon…maybe!

my labels

labels

After writing this post and seeing a few of the comments, I decided to label all my posts, even ones I’d already written. We’ll I’m finally done and I’ve learned a few things:

  • Books. I need to read more books and write about them. I’m getting better at this.
  • Brody. I adore Brody and continue to post about him. This blog is kind of his journal. If I were my mom, I would keep a journal for him until he was 12-years-old, but I’m not. I’m glad I have that journal for myself though!
  • Family. The label “family” is my family, as in Don, Brody, and I. We need to do more family things together!
  • Food. Obviously I eat, but I need to record more what meals we have when they are delish! Especially since I married a chef!
  • Myself. I think I talk to much about myself. However, this label includes just miscellaneous stuff too, so I don’t always just talk about myself lol.
  • Relatives. I need to visit my relatives more, including my immediate family. Why can’t we all just live in AZ?!
  • Technology. This number should be higher! Technology makes me get the chills.
  • Vacation. This one needs some major help. Luckily we are going on 2 vacations in July!

Any other labels I should add to my collection?

my google calendars

Don and I are addicted to Google Calendar. We share out to each other our calendars, so we see what the other is doing. I’m purple, he’s green. And then we have a calendar for Brody, since he’s such a busy little kid lol. Someday he will be!

When I was in Virginia Beach, my friend Kirstynn kept trying to convince me that I need to create a monthly menu calendar. She just writes hers on paper and puts it on the fridge. Since I love technology, and since her convincing finally worked, we have a menu calendar now! I love it because I can make a meal stretch over two days. Or I can drag-and-drop a meal to another day if I don’t feel like fixing it, or don’t have the ingredients. I love how I can put links to recipes in the item. If Don is at work, he can add meals to the menu as well. We are loving our new menu calendar! Thanks Kirstynn!

As you can see below, my Reminders calendar is not in a color. That means I don’t want it to display on my calendar when I look it it, however, it sends reminders to my phone so I can remember to do something. For example, pick up coupons from neighbor every Tuesday, floss,  send hours to my boss, get coupons ready for the morning outing with Brody, watch Katie Brown’s Workshop on PBS, watch Biggest Loser (when it was on), wash sheets, backup all data on my pc using Microsoft SyncToy, shower (I do that at night and forget to sometimes lol) etc. You get the picture.

calendar

I love Google Calendar because you can add multiple calendars to one account. Maybe we’ll have a few more kids and they will be added to it as well! If you have any more ideas for calendars, send them my way!

Read Google Voice’s post that they wrote today.

I love using Google Voice! I’ve had it for a few months now as a beta tester.

labeling posts

I want to go back and label all the blog posts I’ve never labeled, but before I do that, I was just wondering why each of you label your posts? For putting your blog into a book later? Just to be able to look back at things? Or why? If there isn’t a great reason, I may not do it lol.

Thanks for your response!

family website

I know Facebook and blogs are great, but our family LOVES having a personal family website where we can post things on a message board, post pictures, post files, etc. We use easysite.com and have used it for over two years. I just received an email from them saying that we can get a year for free if we referral three people. So, if you’re interested, just go here: www.easysite.com/?LS=LoweBunch

goodwill finds

Yesterday Brody and I went to Goodwill because I was on the hunt for something for me. Instead of getting something for me, we found an early birthday present for Brody! Yes, next month he will be one. Wow! He loves his new standing toy!

My friend Danelle was here visiting last week and she told me Brody was just army crawling because I put him in longer shorts (thinking that was stylish). Instead I've been inhibiting his crawling. She said it was like trying to crawl in a skirt. Oops. So, we bought some 80s style (shorter) shorts from Goodwill and within hours he was crawling so much better! The things you learn.

i have a stalker

I added Google Latitude to my phone, so now my hubby can look at Google Maps and see where I am. Today he texted me and said, "Are you at Bashas?" So cool huh?

You have to have the data plan to have Google Latitude on your phone, and Don doesn’t have he data plan, so I guess I can’t stalk him lol. But I like having a stalker lol. It makes me feel safer knowing that Don can always look to see where I am.

If you’re interested in using it, go here: http://www.google.com/latitude

take over website

I currently use this LDS Scripture Daily website: http://ldssd.org/ and love it! It has some issues, so I emailed the owner of the site letting him know the issues.  His response was that he just doesn’t have time to maintain this site. I told him I was a computer programmer and that I could help him out. He said if I’m willing to work on this site he would just hand over the whole site to me. Very cool huh?

So, if I take over this site, would any of you use it?

Email follow-up comments to

Am I the only one that doesn’t check the checkbox that says “Email follow-up comments to…” when I’m making a comment on somebody’s blog?

Capture

My old roommate had not ever responded to any comments I had made on her blog, or so I thought. I finally emailed her and asked her why she never responds to my comments. She said she did, but just under the other comments. I guess that makes sense, but I’m just so used to people just responding with an email.

What do you guys do? Check the checkbox? Or just reply by email?

comment notification email

I just learned that two of my friends don’t receive emails when people comment on their blogs. I was like…how the heck do you know when someone comments then?! They said they just go back and look at their blog. Who the heck has time for that?! And I’m sure many comments are missed! So, here’s an easy way to make sure you receive an email when someone comments on your blog:

digital detachment

Did any of you read this article in March’s Ensign? It really hit me hard. Is it ironic however, that I read the Ensign on my Blackberry. LOL.

I love technology and always will, but I just need to always keep my priorities straight.

email notifications

If you don’t want to receive an email every time I post to my blog, just respond to this and I’ll remove you from the list. Or if you already read it, and don’t need to receive the email as a reminder, I’ll remove you also.

Just let me know…

another favor

People always get so frustrated when their computer has issues, and they haven’t backed up their data. Or people don’t even  know how to backup their data. Or they just don’t want to continually backup their data. I have a solution for you. Well, Microsoft does…and it’s free.

Use Microsoft SyncToy 2.1. It’s very easy and simple. I have an external harddrive that contains all my backed up data. I have SyncToy automatically do a backup every night. If I delete pictures or documents on my computer, my backup will do the same. If I add pictures to my computer, or rearrange my pictures in new folders, my backup will look identical to it. Magical huh? And no worrying anymore about your data.

If you need help doing this, I’d be glad to help…for free. Or I accept cute boys clothes, food, or anything really ;)

do me a favor

Can everyone do me a favor and PLEASE remove Norton and McAfee from their computers? They slow them down terribly! It drives me nuts to work on a computer that has one of those on there. Even if you paid for them, it’s NOT worth it.

Instead use Microsoft Security Essentials. You have to have a legal copy of Windows to use it, but it’s the best!

You don’t need any other junk on your computer for spyware, malware, viruses, etc. Remove it all! If you need help, I can help you (remotely using Windows Remote Assistance). Free of course. I just love helping with computers! Don does too.

Another tip: Don’t install any toolbars (Yahoo, Google, MSN, etc.) for your browsers. It slows down your browsing experience with the JavaScript it uses. Plus, it lessens your screen space.

If you have any questions, ask away.

Yes, I’m a geek.

google & microsoft

I can’t just choose one of them. I love Microsoft and Google both!

Some of the reasons I love Google:

  • My iGoogle homepage, which has most of my essentials. This is what I see every time I open my web browser:
    • Google Tasks – If you’re a Lowe, you have a to-do list :)
    • Google Voice – I LOVE this. I’m only using it for my voicemail for right now, until it can do mass text messaging and picture messaging. Different people hear different things when they call me. It’s awesome!
    • Google Reader – Super essential. I use this to read all my friends, family, programming, and other random blogs.
    • ClearCheckBook.com – Don and I use this online checkbook that we absolutely LOVE!!! We give ourselves a certain amount every month to use and this really helps us out a lot. It’s not hooked to our bank account or anything. It’s just like a checkbook, but online.
    • Google Calendar – Don and I each have our own calendar but we share them out to each other. Makes life easy. We don’t discuss things sometimes, since we just put it on the calendar so the other person knows about it!!  Also, the calendar sends reminders to our phones, which we setup.

image

  • Other Google things I love:
    • Google Documents – Don and I share a shopping list on here. I shared the document out to him and he just has a link on his home page to it. Anytime we need something, we just add it to that list. And you can see the other documents we have.

image

    • Google Talk – Chat with my boss and some other friends.
    • Google Blogger – For my blog, obviously.
    • Gmail – I use my gmail account for work related things. I use Gmail through Outlook though. I’m a huge keyboard user, so I just like Outlook better. Yes, I know Gmail has keyboard shortcuts too, but I’m just so used to Gmail.
    • YouTube – Yes, this is owned by Google. I like to watch videos on how to do things. I never just watch YouTube. It’s only if I’m researching something, which I love to research!!!

Okay, onto Microsoft now.  I could go on FOREVER on why I love them, but here are just a few.

  • Windows Live
    • Windows Live Messenger – I chat with friends and family.
    • Windows Live Mail – I’m in LOVE with this. I can’t describe how much I love this. If you have a hotmail account, you should TOTALLY use this! I also use the Feed Reader in this to read my Frugal and Coupon blogs. That way I can save them into certain folders.
    • Windows Live Writer – I write posts on my blog using this. I’m using it to write this post :) It makes it SOOOO easy to post things. Using Blogger is much harder.
    • Windows Live Photo Gallery -  I love this for many reasons, but one of them is it is linked with Windows Live Writer. I can just select a few photos and choose “Make a blog post” and it will automatically open up Windows Live Writer and insert those pictures. Then I just finish writing my post.
  • Visual Studio – I use this for work constantly. It’s what I use to code.
  • SQL Server – The database I use for work.
  • MSDN – Where I get all my software for free through work.
  • Microsoft Security Essentials – No need for Norton or junk like that. You have to have a legal version of Windows to use this. It’s free. Love it!

Other essentials.

  • Xmarks. It makes sure all my bookmarks are synced up between my PC and my laptop. Makes things so much easier.

image

  • Snipping Tool – makes it super easy to take screenshots.
  • OpenPandora – a windows application to listen to Pandora.com.
  • Syncplicity – I use this to back up all my data offsite. It’s $100/year but makes me feel so safe. And I never have to do anything. It backs up everything (I choose to backup) for me. Plus, work pays for it.

That’s all I can think of for now. I LOVE technology!!! Can’t you tell?!
